BHD ARCHITECTS
Originally founded by Denis W. Butler in 1989, the firm has provided professional architectural services to the communities of Utah and other states for over 30 years. In 2008, long-time employees Lafe Harris and Mike Davey became partners. The firm was renamed to BHD Architects and moved to Draper, conveniently located adjacent to Bangerter Highway and I-15.

We have successfully completed hundreds of projects for a wide range of clients, including office buildings, tenant improvements, municipal, religious, retail, restaurants, industrial, standard/prototype plans for large institutions, and design of office buildings, municipal buildings, religious buildings, and residential buildings
We provide a wide range of services to assist with every aspect of the project, including pre-project planning, development services, due diligence studies, feasibility studies, municipal land approvals, as-built documentation, envelope studies, BOMA calculations, attic ventilation calculations, and drone services. We have a surveying drone and an interior drone. We have two FAA-certified drone pilots on staff.
Longevity
We strive to make life easier for the long-term facilities and maintenance groups that will be responsible for this project after construction is complete. We provide access to electronic copies of all of the as-built drawings, specifications, color schedule, soils report, project photos, etc., that were created throughout the project.
We are known for our meticulously coordinated and accurate construction documents. This attention to detail reduces confusion, change orders, and design discrepancies. We place the same emphasis on our site plans. Because of our careful review of the soils reports, surveys, and grading plans, we have never had a building with settling problems.
Communication
One of the company owners will always be available to respond to your needs. Mike Davey and Lafe Harris will both be very familiar with all aspects of your project. Your project becomes our baby.
We will nurture it, love it, treat it like our own, and then reluctantly give it back to you when the project is completed. We take great pride in our projects and give them the utmost attention.
During design and construction, we will issue reports, responses, and other paperwork in a timely manner. We are known for our good system of field reports. We and our consultants will issue reports with pictures that track unresolved items.
Affordability
The best design combines form, function, and affordability. We take our responsibility to provide economical designs for our clients very seriously.
At no additional cost, we can provide near photo-realistic renderings of the building. Because we design in 3D software, costly coordination problems are reduced and our clients can visualize the interior and exterior of the building before construction begins.
We stay up-to-date on the latest software, technology, and services. We utilize drones, infrared cameras, tripod-mounted lasers, 360-degree cameras, and the latest equipment and methods to assist with the design and to verify construction of the project is completed correctly.

Principal Architect
Architecture is the way Lafe combines his love for art and drawing with his desire for structure and purpose. He graduated from the University of Utah with a Masters in Architecture and holds professional licensing from the American Institute of Architects (AIA). He enjoys the challenge that architecture gives him every day to solve problems that provide individuals and businesses the spaces for living well. Lafe spends his time outside work in his garden and cycling the streets of the Wasatch Front.

Mike has always loved good design and experiencing the exhilaration of seeing designs come to life. He thoroughly enjoys creating spaces that improves his clients’ quality of life. As a graduate of the University of Utah, he has always called Utah home. When not working, he can be found running, biking, backpacking, skiing, or paddling in the mountains with his wife, kids, and dogs.

Brian came to BHD after drafting log homes and luxury residential projects. He has over 20 years of experience drafting and holds certifications from ITT. He works tirelessly to complete drawings with exactness and clarity. Away from his desk, he records music.

Brad Larson

Brad joined BHD from the construction side of things as a construction superintendent.
Aside from modeling in the latest CAD systems, he is our resident drone expert. He also uses his drone skills to help local search and rescue teams whenever possible.

Annette Barney
Office Manager
Annette recently joined the BHD team bringing her experience in marketing and small-business management. She is a graduate of BYU-Provo and has been calling Utah home for the last 15+ years. When away from her desk, she supports local charter schools serving as school board secretary to Entheos Academy.
